  1. Thanks very much for posting my article about How Children Succeed and Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. I thought Tough’s book was wonderful. Now, let’s hope it influences the way disadvantaged children–and all children–are raised.

    As an English professor, I was also amazed by the similarities between poor heroes and heroines and the children Tough describes. Long before researchers where studying child poverty, authors like Austen, the Brontes, and Dickens understood that impoverished children are traumatized and that it takes grit and resilience to survive.
