Dear Mr. Tough,
One of our Board members is a huge fan of your work and has tried, unsuccessfully thus far, to contact you. She has asked me to follow up and make another attempt to reach you.

Our organization, based in Dallas, is creating just the systemic change in public education about which you write. We have created an unprecedented public-private partnership in the 11th largest urban school district -- with the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, the Dallas Public Library System, the Dallas ISD, the Parks and Recreation Department, over 60 non-profit arts, cultural and community-based organizations, national and local foundations (most notably, the Wallace Foundation), and local corporations and individuals -- and we are changing the lives of children in every place children learn: in school, in their neighborhoods, in their homes. We have been featured in publications by the Harvard Education Press, the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, RAND Corporation, and the Ford Foundation as leaders in the nation for coordinating community resources to support and reform the public education system.

We have distributed your book to our Executive Management Team and many of our Board members, and we plan to give Whatever It Takes to our each of our top donors at a recognition and thank you event in February.

Mr. Tough, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and to introduce you to our work. Is there any chance your book tour might bring you to Dallas?

Thank you in advance for your consideration and
kindest regards,

LeeAnn Harle-Le Goff

Hi Cathy.

So far, no plans for a Boston trip. But I'd like to come at some point in the next couple of months. We'll try to make it happen, and I'll post details here if it works out.

Thanks,

Paul

You shouldn't have to agree with an author in order to learn from their books. Whatever It Takes, Relentless Pursuit, and Tested, or the New Yorker articles by Katherine Boo are three great works that do a wonderful service by a) placing complex and contradictory dynamics in a clear manner, and b) giving the reader a feel for poor children.

My complaint with education books that read like a manifesto are not that I disagree with their authors. Ideological books like No Excuses or Its Being Done shown no sensitivity to schooling and have a deaf ear in regard to children and teens.

This audio piece was fantastic - an excellent insight into the brain development research behind Canada's work, the sociological and economic case that Heckman makes, as well as a nice peek inside the Baby College.

Hi Graham.

Yes, we're hoping to do a reading and signing at the HCZ headquarters on 125th Street some time this fall, in conjunction with the Hue-Man Bookstore. As soon as I have details, I'll post them here. Thanks for your interest.
